The most requested change in this market. Also the one where the difference between a good build and a bad one is entirely invisible once the tile is on.
Why a slab makes this easy
A same-footprint tub-to-walk-in conversion in Port St. Lucie runs $8,500-16,000; going curbless takes it to $14,000-26,000.
Frameless glass adds roughly $1,500-3,500 to a Port St. Lucie shower, and a single fixed panel achieves most of the look for less.

A curbless shower needs the shower floor to sit lower than the bathroom floor so water runs the right way. In a house with wooden floor joists, achieving that means either notching structural members - often not permitted - or raising the entire rest of the floor.
On a slab you have a third option: recess the concrete. A shallow area is cut and re-poured lower, the sloped bed goes in, and the finished shower floor lands where it should with no structural argument. This is why zero-threshold showers are common and reasonably priced here and comparatively rare up north.
What separates a good build from a leak
- A proper waterproofing membrane, named in the quote. Cement board alone is not waterproofing - it is a backer that tolerates moisture. Ask which system and get it written down.
- Correct slope to the drain, built into the mortar bed or a pre-sloped tray. Roughly a quarter inch per foot. Too little and it pools; too much and it feels wrong underfoot.
- A linear drain against a wall, or a centre drain with a four-way slope. Linear costs a little more and makes large-format tile much easier to lay.
- The membrane turned up the wall high enough and lapped correctly at the corners. Corners are where failures start.
- A flood test before tiling. The drain is plugged, the base is filled with water and left for 24 hours. Ask whether it will be done. Good contractors offer it unprompted.
Every one of those five items is buried before you see the finished job. That is exactly why they are worth naming in the contract - it is the only point at which you have leverage over them.
A shower that leaks slowly into a slab does not announce itself. It shows up as a musty smell or a dark patch on the other side of the wall, sometimes a year later.
Design details worth the money
- A hand shower on a slide bar alongside the fixed head. Useful at every age and cheap to include.
- A bench or a fold-down seat, with blocking behind it whether or not you fit one now.
- A recessed niche formed during the build rather than a hanging caddy.
- A single fixed glass panel rather than a full enclosure - less to clean, and it keeps the open feel that is the point of the design.
- Non-slip tile, ideally with a stated wet coefficient of friction rather than a marketing description.
Common questions
Will water escape onto the bathroom floor?
Not if the slope and the drain are right and the shower is long enough. The usual cause of splash-out is an under-sized opening with the shower head pointed at it. A good layout puts the head on the wall away from the entry.
Is a one-day shower system worth it?
Those systems fit an acrylic surround over the existing walls. They are real products and for a sound, dry bathroom they can be a sensible budget choice. They are the wrong choice if there is any chance of water damage behind the existing surround, because nothing gets inspected.
Does a curbless shower hurt resale here?
In this market, generally the opposite. A large share of buyers on the Treasure Coast are downsizing or retiring, and a well-built zero-threshold shower reads as a premium feature rather than a medical one.
